Cancer Protein Description

This report provides a detailed description of a selected cancer protein with information collected from various sources, including UniProt, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute’s Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancer (COSMIC), and the Atlas of Genetics and Cytogenetics in Oncology and Haematology.

Protein Name: KLK5
Gene Name: KLK5
Protein Full Name: Kallikrein-5
Alias: Kallikrein-like protein 2;Stratum corneum tryptic enzyme
Mass (Da): 32019
Number AA: 293
UniProt ID: Q9Y337
Locus ID: 25818
COSMIC ID: KLK5
Gene location on chromosome: 19q13.41
Cancer protein type: UNCLEAR
Effect of cancer mutation on protein: UNCLEAR
Effect of active protein on cancer: UNCLEAR
Number of cancer specimens: 19717
Percent of cancer specimens with mutations: 0.45
Normal role description: Secreted serine protease. Plays a role in skin desquamation and can digest ECM components, such as collagen, laminin and fibronectin. Activates KLK7. However its role in tumorigenesis and its physiological function are not fully understood. Upregulated in ovarian, breast and bladder cancer, downregulated in prostate, testicular and NSCLC.
Commentary on involvement of protein in cancer: No mutations have been reported on the Atlas of Genetics in Oncology or the SANGER COSMIC database.
