Normal role description: | PRKAB1 is a protein-serine/threonine kinase - regulatory subunit of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). AMPK senses low intracellular energy levels upon increased AMP/ATP ratio. Binding of AMP to AMPK activates the heterotrimeric kinase and leads to modulation of downstream pathways. PRKAB1 and PRKAB2 contain a glycogen binding domain that may target AMPK to glycogen. Expression of PRKAB1 and PRKAB2 may be regulated by p53. |
Commentary on involvement of protein in cancer: | No mutations reported on the Sanger COSMIC database or the Atlas of Oncology. |
